Nutritional Therapy FAQ’s

Why see a Registered Nutritional Therapist instead of a Nutritionist?

Here in the UK, Registered Nutritional Therapists undergo extensive training on diet, lifestyle and the impact of food and nutritional supplements on a wide variety of illnesses and on clinical practice. A Nutritionist may advise public bodies and organisations about public health, but they are not trained for seeing patients one-to-one.(1)  Nutritional therapy looks at an individual’s digestion to help identify potential nutritional imbalances and understand how they may contribute to symptoms and health concerns.

People are individuals. That’s why diet books, diet fads or package diets may seem to work on some but not on others. Nutritional therapy is VERY personal.

Fact Diet influences the balance between healthy and disease states through the effects our choices make on diet-related genes. Some of these genes have a hair-trigger dependency.

Like a football team, all parts of the body and their cells has a game to play – magnificent life. Your system works like the network of interconnecting plays that work without your awareness, responding to the changes and challenging things in your life all without effect on each other – UNTIL balance is lost.

Initially, the loss of balance may be something which you ignore; simple things tiredness, inability to sleep well, funny reactions to foods, changes in bowel habits, odd things with your skin or hair an inability to keep your weight where you want it. These are the markers of loss of balance not just chronic disease.

As we assist you to turn back time, we frequently work alongside your medical professional and will communicate with your other healthcare professionals involved in your care to explain your individualised nutritional therapy programme as provided.

How Does Nutritional Therapy Work?

Your diet or lifestyle choices may be adding to the risk factor of disease. Your genes are your blueprint of your body – you are absolutely unique and you have unique needs- you are uniquely you! The major systems of your body (skeletal, muscular, nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, excretory, endocrine, immune, reproductive and integumentary [skin, hair, nails) are under an epigenetic influence.

Trouble comes when you no longer balance your genetic code and epigenetic abilities with your environmental challenges, meaning internal factors and external factors. We look for ways to improve your resilience and how to re-establish your physiological equilibrium. We develop individualised programs that are uniquely yours as the key that fits only you.

The protein cap on your genes, like a contractor, reads your genetic code as your blueprint of possible responses and looks at your environment (what demand, challenge or damage you do to yourself) and makes the best reactive decision it can. Based on exposure and intake you create a chemical soup in which you soak your genes (and all of your body’s cells) your regulatory genes as your contractor will respond and fashion the best body it can for you under those circumstances. Better choices will allow for the design of a better body. We can test and give you specific information on which version/variation of gene or regulatory gene you have been born with which will inform your ideal diet.

Nutritional Therapy aims to transform your decisions that play a role in the onset, incidence, progression and/or severity of chronic diseases. We help you sort through the complexities of your life and medical history to find the starting point. Dietary intervention based on knowledge of nutritional status, nutritional requirements and genotype (i.e., “personalised nutrition”) can be used to prevent, mitigate or cure chronic disease.

There is always hope, no mater how seemingly hopeless a situation may seem; the human genome, either directly or indirectly, alters gene expression or structure to the degree that diet influences diet-regulated genes. The right approach to an individual’s nutritional balance and doing the right thing long enough will bring about a positive change. We are suited to help you find and make those changes through administering personalised nutrition and lifestyle programmes.
